Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Curl & Afro Hair Mask and the Curl Leave-In Cream?
The mask is a weekly rinse-out repair treatment, best for 3C to 4C hair. The leave-in is a daily no-rinse moisturizer that works from 2A to 4C. They do different jobs at different frequencies. If you are between 3A and 3C you sit in the overlap and should use both: mask on wash day, leave-in every time you style.
Can I use it as a leave-in conditioner?
No. It is formulated to be rinsed out after five minutes. Leaving it in will weigh your hair down and leave it greasy. Use the Rolda Curl Leave-In Cream for that.
Is it a protein treatment?
No. This is a moisture and conditioning treatment. If your hair is over-proteined and stiff, this is what you want. If you need protein specifically, this is not that product.
Can I use it on locs, twists or braids?
On locs and twists, yes, though rinse very thoroughly because product residue is the enemy of locs. On installed braids or extensions, apply to your own hair at the roots and mid-lengths only, and rinse completely.
Does it contain sulfates or silicones?
Neither. Behentrimonium methosulfate is in the ingredients and is not a sulfate. It is a conditioning agent that provides slip, which is exactly what makes the detangling work.
Will it loosen my curl pattern?
No. Nothing in the formula alters curl structure. Well-hydrated coils hang with more length because they are heavier and more elastic, which some people read as looser. Your pattern is unchanged.
How long do I really need to leave it on?
Five minutes is enough. Longer will not do more. Hair absorbs what it can absorb in the first few minutes.
Can I use it after a chemical process or color?
Yes, and it is a good idea. Wait until at least 48 hours after the service.
Is it good for 4C hair specifically?
Yes. 4C is the driest, most fragile pattern and it is the reason this product exists. It is the tighter end of the range this mask was formulated for.
Do I still need a conditioner?
Not on the day you use the mask. The mask replaces your conditioner that day, it does not stack on top of it.
Is it cruelty free?
Yes. Rolda does not test on animals.
Does it contain alcohol? Will it dry my hair out?
No. The formula contains cetearyl alcohol, which is a fatty alcohol. Fatty alcohols are waxy, oil-derived conditioning agents that soften hair and help it hold water. They are not the short-chain drying alcohols, like alcohol denat. or isopropyl alcohol, that evaporate quickly and leave curls dry and brittle. So yes, an alcohol appears on the ingredient list, but it is the conditioning kind, not the drying kind.
